If you're ever looking around a map between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, you know it's got no commercially navigable bodies of water until Lake Michigan in 200 miles. So, when you see a town called Portland, you investigate. Portland, Indiana - like all of the Portlands - is named for Portland, Maine. When they got a post office, most residents simply wanted to name the own after its founder.

Being a humble man, he insisted they come up with something else. During a long, drawn out town meeting, eventually the founder spoke up and said that the town had everything to do with the town he came from, where he learned pioneering stuff. He said, "Why not call this town Portland?"

Everyone had a hardy laugh, and came to agree. And Portland's residents have always had a sense of humor about their name, despite being surrounded by corn fields. In addition to an annual festival and many little things like their town flag being blue, with a sailor's cap featuring a prominent anchor in the middle; in the late 1960s, a local women's boutique designed and started to sell a new style of pants, made from a range of  fabrics.

As they started to become more and more popular, and started getting ripped off, they were asked what they call this new style. With the classic sense of humor often found in Portland in Indiana, they began calling them Landlubbers!
